We fix $7 Haircuts (or $7 Boudoir Photos as the case may be)

When people hear that I am a boudoir photographer the first question they always ask is, “Wow, how many shoots do you do a week?”.

People are always curious how much time I spend behind the camera shooting.

Truth be told, the time I spend shooting is probably the least time consuming part of my job. After all,  I am not just a photographer, I am a business owner too…and just as much love and time goes into branding, and marketing, and running my business as shooting and editing the images.

Part of the time I spend on marketing and branding is spent working social media. I spend quite a bit of time on Facebook, and Twitter, and of course working on my Blog. This week, there seemed to be a recurring theme on Facebook that I noticed, that I would love to talk a little bit about.

“Cheap Boudoir Photos”.

Ouch. Even the sound of that hurts my ears. It’s like nails on a chalkboard. First of all, in my humble opinion – the words “Cheap” and “Boudoir Photos” should NEVER be used in the same sentence.

I mean, isn’t part of the reason you book a boudoir shoot to see yourself in a CLASSY, sexy, gorgeous way? It just cracks me up to think of one girl saying to another, “Girl, I found the cheapest boudoir photographer, she seriously is SO cheap”. Wouldn’t you rather your friend say to you “Girl, I found the BEST boudoir photographer, she is seriously amazing”.

After reading all the Facebook status updates offering super cheap photos, (*gasp*) FREE photos, and the “I will give you my first born child if you book a boudoir shoot with me” specials….this little story came to mind:

A new hair salon opened up for business right across the street from the old established hair cutter’s place. They put up a big bold sign which read:

“WE GIVE SEVEN DOLLAR HAIRCUTS!”

Not to be outdone, the old Master Barber put up his own sign:

“WE FIX SEVEN DOLLAR HAIRCUTS”

Now, don’t get me wrong. I DO realize everyone starts somewhere. I also had tactics when I first started to get customers in the door, and start some buzz. I am not knocking that AT ALL. I just thought this was a great opportunity to give some  guidance to everyone out there that is looking for a boudoir photographer.

The message is to PLEASE be careful. It is important to go to someone you can trust. Someone who can provide you with an amazing experience, confidentiality, and safety. Someone who has the proper paperwork to protect you (ie model releases). A photographer who doesn’t pressure you to do things you are uncomfortable with. One who respects your privacy, and your boundaries.

How do you know if the photographer you found can provide you with all of the above. Here are some other things to consider (in addition to price!):

  • How many clients has the photographer worked with?
  • What does she do with the photos when he/she is done with your job?
  • Who is editing the photos?
  • Where are they doing the shoots?
  • If you sign a model release and later change your mind, will they take the photos down?
  • Are they geared for boudoir or do they mostly shoot something else?
  • Have you googled them – read reviews about them – talked to anyone that has worked with them? Have you even MET them?

My husband always says, if it seems too good to be true – it usually is. I hate to admit it, but he is always right. We have already fixed our fair share of $7 haircuts, and we will continue to do so….but my hopes are that we were able to educate you to make a smarter, more education decision when booking a photographer, and in the end you will be happier with your experience.

Have a Sexy Day,
Jen

David - Jen, you are sooooo right. As someone who has been in this profession for 35 years, I cringe at the number of “camera mommies” popping up and calling themselves professional. They have no training; they just “love taking pictures”.

That’s not enough.

A true professional needs skills and techniques beyond a basic copy of Photoshop and a few effects that whack out the color or saturation. They should be skilled in lighting (is the lighting style your photographer using going to flatter your form or accent all your flaws?)

When people choose the low bidder, they usually leave a little margin for error in their budgeting. If you can afford that margin for error, you can afford someone better in the first place.

Melissa Green - So true Jen! Had to share. Love your work and how you always seem to keep it real :)

admin - David – I agree with 1000%, but I do have to stick up for the camera mommies. I was one of them back in the day (I guess I still am in a way)….but you are right – just because you have a camera and the desire does not make you a professional photographer!

Feuza - great points Jen and i would not worry about the cheap boudoir photos, just keep on rocking it

Ben - Excellent post! I can’t agree more.

Everyone has to start somewhere, but when I started I made sure I had the skills to start with (a formal photography education and years of retouching/Photoshop experience) and the business pieces (insurance, forms, etc.) to compensate for the lack of specific experience in boudoir. Those things go a long way, too.

Brenda Magee - Love your work. Great advice to both photographers and clients!! your showiteer Friend Brenda

Stacie Frazier - I was thinking about the people who offer cheap boudoir photography earlier while sitting in my accountants office filing taxes. The expenses of a boudoir business are enormous! The people offering it cheap must not be paying taxes or don’t care about working for nothing, which really doesn’t say a lot for their photography if you think about it. Kind-of frustrating for those of us attempting to do it the right way. Boudoir is a LUXURY service – there’s just no way around it.

Newbies should practice on friends until they are confident enough with ALL of the details of the business before they start taking money from strangers. Boudoir gone bad can harm a woman’s self-esteem. And when poorly managed only serves to hurt all of us. :-(

Jill Mettler - Great blog with awesome points!! Thank you for keeping it real!!!

Trevor Dayley - Awesome post Jen. This is so true! You rock girl!

Chelsea LaVere - Fabulous post, Jen! I cringed too when I see “cheap” and “boudoir” in the same sentence. It’s just not what it’s all about! Eek! :)

Cathy Empey - Thank you for writing this post Jen! I am so glad you shared with us all.

Tammynize - Aw Jen. Such an awesome post. Thank you so much for telling it like is in the most classy way :)

Lynn Clark - I’ve been watching a competitor in my market with much curiosity. She’s been shooting boudoir for about 9 months [which is double my time in so a comparable veteran] and she is always busy. But she is also deeply discounting her prices–60-70%, so that by my figures, she’s barely making anything. Her work is good, so it’s not the “fix the $7 haircut” issue here. I just don’t see how she can stay in business charging $75 for a 2 hour shoot and giving away full-res images.

Wendy Cunningham - LOVE LOVE LOVE Your work. And your message is so true! The same goes for wedding photography too. I cringe when the first thing out of a bride’s mouth is, what are your prices? I almost immediately know that they will not book me. And I know they will end up booking someone with a lower price… which will probably be a mistake in the end. I wish wedding photographers had a chance to fix the $7 wedding photos. :)

Ann - This is the worst one I have seen. And it’s in my neighborhood! http://www.groupon.com/deals/glamour-shots-baltimore?c=all&p=3

Ashley Swallow - Amen sista! BTW, love that background.

Feature Friday – an Upclose and Personal Peek at a Boudoir Shoot.

Wouldn’t it be great to get an upclose and personal sneak peek at someone else’s Boudoir Shoot at our Studio in Queens? Afterall, women from all over Long Island, NYC and beyond are having an amazing time with us.

We truly love our clients, truth be told, many of them become our friends too. We have a growing list of women who keep in touch with us after their shoot, come to visit us from time to time and even invite us to their weddings (I just went to one Saturday night!). One of our friends is Jennifer, and she is going to kick off “Feature Friday”. From time to time, on Fridays we are going to feature interviews with clients so you can see what their experiences were like, and share their love for Boudoir Photography.

….Drumroll please….Introducing….Jennifer!!!

Tell us a little about you…name, age, where do you live, anything you want us to know!

Jennifer age 30 a Queens resident lover of dogs and chocolate

What inspired you to do a boudoir shoot?

I had seen Jen’s work on a site called LI Weddings and was so impressed at how amazing each and every woman looked in her photos I had to try it out for myself.

Why did you choose Jenerations?

I read reviews on Jenerations and all I kept reading was how comfortable Jen makes her clients and how everyone felt after their shoot and how amazing their pictures looked. I knew it was something I wanted to do for myself more then for my fiancé.

Where did you shop for your shoot and what inspired your outfit choices?

I went to Victoria’s Secret and Fredrick’s of Hollywood for my outfits. I think I spent more money on outfits then I did on the photos. I went with outfits that I felt comfortable in and felt confident in. I also went with various colors because I had no idea, which colors would look good in pictures or look good on me.

What were your thoughts/Feelings/expectations leading up to your shoot?

I was so super excited to go to the shoot. I walked out of my house with 2 shopping bags full of outfits and shoes to choose from. I knew that no matter what my fiancé would love the pictures the main question was going to be whether I would like the pictures or not.

Tell us a little about your experience at Jenerations – please include thoughts about hair/makeup if you had it done here as well.

I was so comfortable from the moment I walked into the office. First I dumped my two bags of clothes on the table and told Jen pick away. That was my best decision. Jen was like this outfit and this outfit we will work with this background and the white spread on the bed. Going in with no idea of what I wanted to wear or what photos I “needed” to take was perfect. [Though I really wanted to do the shoe heel in the panties and loved the way it came out]

While getting my hair and makeup done there was so much going on I didn’t even have time to be nervous. There were conversations going on, cookies being baked and gorgeous children hanging out too.

I felt like a princess getting my hair and makeup done at the same time. When I finally looked in the mirror I was like who is that LOL it so didn’t look like me and I loved the way I looked.

How was it to see yourself for the first time in the photos?

Jen would give you a sneak peek at a few photos when she was taking them. It wasn’t until she uploaded them that I was like WOW is that really me? I never thought I would look like that. I really felt amazingly beautiful for one of the fist times. I actually saw what my fiancé sees every time he looks at me. I wanted to keep every single photo that was taken.

How did you feel after your shoot was over?

I didn’t want to leave at the end of the shoot. I was kind of like “wait I have more clothes, I will do some more photos” I was so tempted to book another shoot at that very moment. [I will be booking one in 2012 for sure] I was so excited I got in the car and called my girlfriend right away to share with her how amazing the experience was.

If you gave the photos as a gift, can you share what kind of reaction they received?

I actually received a teaser picture by email from Jen and was blown away by it. [The pink outfit one on the white bed is amazing] I actually text messaged it to my fiancé without a message. He called me 2 min. later and was like OMG is that you? I said yes. He was then speechless and told me to hang up so he could look at it again. When I got home he was questioning me about the whole thing. He actually thought I had sent him a picture of a model. I told him the album was on its way with more pictures.

When the album came the smile on his face was amazing. He was ready to book me another shoot that day. He was amazed at the pictures and could not stop looking at them

Has doing a boudoir shoot changed anything about you? Your view of yourself? Anything you can share on this topic would be great!!

I truthfully never thought I would think I was a knockout after the shoot I am amazed at how I looked. I do not wear makeup on a daily basis and I am a brush and go kind of girl with my hair. Seeing what I can look like with some makeup and some hairspray gave me a whole new light on my self.

Truthfully this is something every woman should do for them self at least once in their life. It truly is life changing.

Is there any advice you can give future clients on how to rock their shoot, or clients who want to do a shoot but maybe are too nervous or shy?

Trust Jen…. do not go in with expectations go in with an open mind. I have never read a bad review of her work. Every photo I have seen on her website and others has been amazing. Let yourself have a great time and remember whoever you are giving these photos to, whether it be your husband, fiancé, boyfriend, partner or just doing it for yourself, who ever it is loves you the way you look right now. Just think how much more they will love you with some make up and some hairspray.

Is there anything else you would like to share with us?

Jenerations is amazing! Truly a company that cares about her clients!

Thanks for sharing with us Jennifer! We can’t wait to see you in 2012!!

Please don’t forget to comment and leave Jennifer some love in your comments.

Have a Sexy Day,
Jen

Take me out to the ballgame!

Happy Opening Day!! Baseball starts today, and that means one thing….Spring is here! I think? I mean, it should be. OK, OK, it’s still freezing outside…so let’s warm it up in here with some smokin’ hot baseball themed images.

Yesterday we worked with the gorgeous Ivette. She was fantastic to work with, and she confessed that the Yankee’s gear was really for her – not her hubby. She is a huge Yankee fan! Guess what, so am I…so it made me even more excited for baseball. Go Yanks!!

What made working with Ivette even more fun was her attention to detail. Check out the batting gloves she brought. We love that look (we want to add them to our closet).

Here is one more bonus shot of Ivette – isn’t she a beauty?!

Not only is today opening day, but it’s “Confession Thursday”!! It’s been a few weeks, so I am hoping you all have some confessions to share.

My confession this week….I finally felt like I made it! I have always wanted to be a leader, a trendsetter, and super creative. Well this week – it’s been confirmed. I am all of those things. Do you want to know how I know this?

Because I have officially been ripped off.

Yup, that’s right. There is someone out there (she’s a total Copy Cat – so let’s call her CC for short.) who is stealing from me. She is swiping my ideas, copying my poses and set ups, using my wording on her website, etc… Yup, that’s right. It’s time to celebrate, because I am officially being imitated. You are probably thinking, “Jen, are you crazy? You should be really mad and upset!”

I’m not going to lie. At first, I was. Upset was probably an understatement. Every single piece of my business is a piece of me. I have put thought into everything single thing I do here. There is not one detail which I haven’t touched personally. It’s taken me years to get where I am…and someone had the nerve to just simply take it. Boom. Done. No hard work put into it whatsoever. I was livid.

But then I had a few days to think about it. You know what I realized. Not only am I flattered that she is trying to imitate what I do, but I actually feel bad for her.

I feel bad that someone who considers herself creative and an artist can’t even come up with her own poses, or package names. Someone who wants to be a leader, sadly only knows how to follow. So instead of wasting energy on being mad, I am going to thank her.

Thank you Ms. Copy Cat for pushing me harder. For making me better, and forcing me to push outside my comfort zone to be different. To be even more of a trendsetter and a leader. I am sending you light and love…and hoping you can find yourself, what you are about so that you can create your business around you.

Have a Sexy Opening Day everyone!!

Jen

Stacey - Great post – lovely images. You can always see a class act a mile away – they take the high road…just like you.

A brand, a product or service is an extension of the person producing it. I think people get gut feelings about a phony. Don’t sweat it and keep reaching for those stars. You’re doing fabulous!

Alison CIola - Jen, another great blog. It really got me thinking about creativity. Your talent and knack for always being a trend setter and thinking out of the box is truly your renewable resource. You have always had it and will always have it. As long as you’re taking a breath, your creative juices and cutting edge marketing ideas will be ever flowing. This C.C or Copy Cat, as you so aptly call her, has to always find new sources to rip off. Whether it is stealing other people’s photos or your poses, package names (c’mon are you kidding me she couldn’t come up with her OWN names for her packages?) or even website verbiage, she always needs to be on the prowl for new creative sources to rip off.

I did see the website, and it has the elements that she ripped off from you, but it is way diluted, not as interesting, and quite frankly the pictures show a definite lack of talent. So to sum this up, she has a lack of talent, lack of creativity and lack of integrity. Like you, I feel sorry for her. It must be awful to be her. Keep doing what you’re doing. Like one of my mentors used to say to me “she is a pimple on the ass of progress! “

Wendy Cunningham - I love it! First of all the photos are fabulous! But I love your attitude about your CC. Go YOU!

Amanda-lee - My offer still stands…..wink,wink….

E - Bravo Jen! And yes you are a leader and your works makes so many people feel great about themselves. Thank you for sharing your dedication and talent with us all!

Lisa C. - Jen – great blog today. Love the pictures. And wanted to also say, love your attitude with CC as well. take that flattery and run with it. You do amazing work, and you are so incredibly creative. Love the attitude you have with CC!!

Sometimes, less is more…

Happy Wednesday everyone! I hope your week is going well so far. Here at Jenerations we are in the thick of our busy season. It’s an exciting time. We meet a lot of amazing people and see a lot of gorgeous lingerie. So often, women want to know what to bring and what flatters the body the most. For this “Wear it Wednesday” we are going to focus on bustiers and corsets.

Bustiers and corsets have an amazing way of showing of a woman’s curves, while happily covering some of our trouble areas. They are flattering to pretty much everyone. (Breathing is optional!) lol.

Because your shape will be so va va voom in these items, we tend to like more simple corsets. Less is definitely more. Take a simple black corset….add jewelry, or gloves, or even a bird cage veil and boom…classic, and gorgeous every time! Here are some that we love!!

Happy Shopping Everyone!!
Have a Sexy Day,

Jen

xoxo

Lisa Otto - Less is always more, in anything really :) Never want to take away from the focus of the shot and you nail it every time.

Wendy Cunningham - Girl your shots continue to amaze me. I love your use of lighting for dramatic umph!

Introducing the “New Year, New You” Boudoir Contest Winner!

Today was SUCH a fun day! Debra, the winner of our New Year, New You contest had her makeover today! We started the day by shopping at Azure Lingerie in Bayside. What a fun store. There were so many things to choose from!

They just opened another location in Bellmore…so if you are out in Nassau check them out. We have some coupons, so if you want some drop us a line!

This is their Bayside location:

Diana liked this lil’ number…now if I could only get her to do a shoot!!

While at Azure, our game plans was to look for 2 looks that flattered Debra, and yet gave us a totally different feel. (This is a good idea for your shoot as well.) Debra is getting married in the fall, so we thought one bridal look would be a good idea and maybe something a little edgier would be fun too. Once we picked out what we wanted, we went back to the studio and Debra had her hair and makeup done. Tara and Diana worked their magic as usual…check out how cute they all are. (Love that Tara is wearing our “Have a Sexy Day” tank!)

After hair and makeup, it was game time. Debra and I went up to the studio and started shooting. She was so fun to work with, and really let us do whatever we thought would be best. Here is a before and after:

I feel so blessed that I had the chance to work with Debra. She is a great mom to two small kids. Someone who doesn’t normally take time out for herself. She deserves to feel and look beautiful, and I am sure her Fiance would agree. Debra, enjoy the photos and best of luck at your wedding!

Don’t forget to leave Debra (and us!) some love below. (Sharing is Caring!)

Have a Sexy Day,
